Dr. Evgen Benedik is a highly experienced clinical nutritionist and academic with over 14 years of expertise in pediatric nutrition, gastroenterology, and neonatology. His research focuses on the critical period of human development, from pre-conception through early childhood, with particular emphasis on human milk composition, fatty acid profiles, and their impact on infant health and gut microbiota. Dr. Benedik has made significant contributions to understanding how nutrition during pregnancy and lactation influences both maternal and infant health.
Currently, Dr. Benedik works as an Assistant Professor at the University of Ljubljana and as a clinical dietitian at the University Medical Centre Ljubljana. He specializes in neonatal and pediatric gastroenterology nutrition and has played a key role in the establishment of Slovenia’s first human milk bank. Dr. Benedik is also involved in pioneering nutritional research and the implementation of advanced analytical techniques, such as GC-FID and GC-MS, for studying human milk and blood samples. His work effectively integrates research with clinical practice, ensuring that nutrition interventions are evidence-based and deliver measurable outcomes for patient health.
Dr. Benedik holds both a Master’s and PhD in Food Science and Technology from the University of Ljubljana, with his doctoral research exploring the role of human milk in the development of infant gut microbiota. He is an active member of several national and international nutrition organizations and regularly contributes to the development of public health nutrition policies in Slovenia.
Through his research, Dr. Benedik has authored more than 30 scientific papers and conference contributions and has mentored numerous students in the field of clinical nutrition.
