SUMMARY:2. Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Metabolomics Methodologies Workshop 2026 \nThe workshop is designed to provide participants with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills in modern metabolomics and lipidomics methodologies\, with a particular focus on mass spectrometry-based approaches and their applications in biological\, clinical\, plant\, and food research. \nThe three-day program combines keynote lectures\, expert presentations\, laboratory demonstrations\, and hands-on workshops led by internationally recognized researchers from academic institutions and industry. Participants will gain an overview of metabolomics workflows\, analytical platforms\, data processing strategies\, quality control procedures\, and challenges associated with metabolomic studies. \nThe workshop will open with a workshop by Prof. Thomas Moritz and will close his lecture on the role of metabolomics in studying biological systems\, highlighting his journey in the field of metabolomics. Additional lectures will cover LC-MS-based metabolomics\, clinical lipidomics\, and applications in plant and food sciences. \nA special practical session at the Agricultural Institute of Slovenia will introduce participants to the application of metabolomics in grapevine production and water-stress evaluation. Industry experts will also present advanced analytical instrumentation\, including QTof platforms and DESI imaging technologies for spatial metabolomics. \nThe final day is dedicated to intensive hands-on training\, focusing on clinical metabolomics methodologies\, experimental design\, quality control\, data preprocessing\, LC-MS data analysis\, and mass spectrometry data processing. These sessions are specifically designed to strengthen participants’ ability to conduct and interpret metabolomics experiments independently. \nBy bringing together experts and trainees from diverse scientific backgrounds\, the workshop offers a unique opportunity to learn state-of-the-art metabolomics methodologies\, exchange knowledge\, and establish new research collaborations. The program is especially suitable for post-graduate students\, early-career researchers\, and professionals interested in applying metabolomics to biomedical\, agricultural\, food\, and environmental research. \n  \n\n\n\n\nDay 1 – 9.9.2026\nTopics\nTitle\nPresenter\n\n\n10-45-11:00   Avla oddelka\nRegistration\n\n\n11-12.30 \nŽ3\nMetabolomics Methodologies \n(workshop)\nProcessing of mass spectrometry data: understanding the differences between qualitative and quantitative processing \n \nInvited Lecturer \nProf. Thomas Moritz \nNovo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic research\, Medical faculty\, Copenhagen University\, Denmark\n\n\n12.30-13:00\nCoffe brake/sendvices\n\n\n9.9.2026 \n13-13:15 \nŽ1\nWelcome\n\nProf. Nataša Poklar Ulrih \nBiotechnical faculty\, University of Ljubljana\, Slovenia \nnatasa.poklar@bf.uni-lj.si\n\n\n13:15-14:00 \n(35+10min) \nŽ1\n\nIntroduction to clinical lipidomics\nDr. Kajetan Trošt \nBiotechnical faculty\, University of Ljubljana\, Slovenia \nkajetan.trost@sund.ku.dk\n\n\n14:00-14:45 \n(35+10min) \nŽ1\nIntroduction to metabolomics methodologies \n(leactures)\nApplications of LC-MS in Plant and Food Research: Selected Case Studies\nAss. SUMMARY:The European Researchers' Night
DESCRIPTION:Assessment of the Authenticity and Quality of Rosemary and Bay Laurel Essential Oils in the Slovenian Market \n \nAs part of the project Era Chair – Foodomics (Horizon Europe\, GA-101186975 )\, we are investigating the authenticity and quality of rosemary and bay laurel essential oils available on the Slovenian market. Using antioxidant assays\, we analyzed samples of essential oils and assessed differences between them. By measuring the stable carbon isotope ratios\, we examined potential adulteration in the oils. Our analysis identified possible cases of adulteration or the addition of other essential oils. This research supports producers and regulators in ensuring that label claims (e.g.\, “100% pure essential oil”) are accurate\, thereby protecting consumers from misleading products. \n \n \n \n

SUMMARY:32. BITENČEVI FOOD DAYS What will we eat tomorrow - food in sustainable food systems
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Food Science of the Faculty of Biotechnology\, University of Ljubljana is organizing the traditional 32nd Bitenč Food Days with the title What will we eat tomorrow – food in sustainable food systems. Prominent experts will present the areas of modern technologies of food production\, processing\, preservation\, packaging and storage\, with an emphasis on sustainable food systems. This year marks 50 years since the organization of the first event\, whose fundamental mission is to familiarize graduates and doctoral students in food science and other experts who are professionally involved in food science and nutrition with the most current scientific findings and achievements in the mentioned field. \nFranc Bitenč was a Slovenian professor and expert in the field of food science. After his passing\, the “Food Days” event was renamed to “Bitenc Food Days” (BŽD) in his honor\, recognizing his significant contribution to the development of food science in Slovenia. \nThe Department of Food Science and Technology at the Biotechnical Faculty\, University of Ljubljana\, is organizing the traditional 32nd Bitenc Food Days under the title “What Will We Eat Tomorrow – Food in Sustainable Food Systems.” \nDistinguished experts will present key areas of modern food production\, processing\, preservation\, packaging\, and storage technologies\, with a special focus on sustainable food systems. \nThis year marks the 50th anniversary of the first event\, whose core mission has been to inform graduates\, doctoral students\, and other professionals in the fields of food science and nutrition about the most current scientific findings and advancements in this area. \n
